Read Exodus 24:3-11 & Psalm 27

Moses took the blood and threw it on the people and said, “Behold the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you.” Exodus 24:8

Power in the Blood-

Moses wrote down all the words and rules the Lord gave him. The children of Israel committed to be obedient to all of these words. Peace offerings were sacrificed. Half of the blood was thrown on the altar. The, Moses took the other half of the blood and threw it on the people.

That may seem a little strange to us.

Blood was how covenants were sealed and how people were connected to the sacrifice. Blood was a foreshadowing of the culmination of the covenant God made with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, which was His promise to send a Savior. There is power in the blood of a sacrifice.

There are other ways God connects us to the sacrifice and His covenant. Through water and the Word, God makes us His own in Holy Baptism. Thankfully, the pastor doesn’t throw blood on us. Instead, he brings it to our lips with Jesus’ words, “Take, drink; this cup is the true blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, shed for the forgiveness of your sins.” These Means of Grace connect us to our Savior and His life-giving blood–the powerful blood that assures us of eternal life.

Heavenly Father, thank you for fulfilling Your covenant of a Savior in the perfect life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. In His name. Amen.
